Un coeur simple. Flaubert Project by Coralie Besse and Marie Laffont

“A Simple Heart” (“Un Coeur Simple”), by French writer Gustave Flaubert, is one of the stories in his Three Tales (Trois Contes), published in 1877. It received admiring reviews at the time and has continued to be second only to his novel Madame Bovary (1857) in recognition and acclaim.

Originally entitled “Le Perroquet” (“The Parrot”), “A Simple Heart” is the story of one woman’s apparently fruitless existence. The protagonist, a hardworking, good-hearted, poor and uneducated woman named Félicité, is said to have been modeled after a maid employed by Flaubert’s family during his childhood, a much beloved woman of tremendous character. The story is unusual among the author’s writings because it is about goodness. In this story of a simple housemaid’s life and death, the reader is invited to view a world of boundless, if not reciprocated, love and spirit. Félicité, a woman of simple mind and devoted heart, suffers tremendous loss but continues to her last breath to love unconditionally. Some critics have suggested that Félicité’s apparently meaningless life and misplaced worship of the parrot, Loulou—whom she adores and whom she imagines, in her dying moment, to be an incarnation of the Holy Ghost—reflect Flaubert’s melancholy and disillusionment with life and with organized religion, particularly the Roman Catholic Church. Most critics agree that this is a poignant account of a sweet, simple, and unrewarded life, one which may have been happy precisely because it was unexamined. It does not matter that Félicité may have misinterpreted or simply not interpreted many of the events in her life: she dies smiling, and thus lives up to her name to the last.

Jacob’s Room by Virginia Woolf.

“Jacob’s Room was published in 1922, Woolf’s third novel.  Jacob is usually thought to represent Woolf’s brother, Thoby, who died at the age of 25 in 1906.  The story follows Jacob from his childhood in Cornwall through his education at Cambridge, his life in London, a trip to Greece, and finally his death in World War I. Betty Flanders, his mother, is a widow. Jacob’s brother, Archer, will also fight in the war. Other characters are the Reverend Andrew Floyd, who proposes to Betty and is turned down. Captain Barfoot, a man with a disabled wife, is a friend and frequent visitor of Betty’s. At Cambridge, Timothy Durrant is a friend; his sister, Clara, is an ongoing character who is attracted to Jacob, but the relationship never develops. Richard Bonamy is a Cambridge friend who becomes a closer friend in London. Florinda is a loose and sexy interlude. Nick Branham is an artist who introduces Jacob to his model, Fanny Elmer, who falls in love with him. Jacob visits friends in Paris, then goes on to Greece where he falls in love with a married woman, Sandra Wentworth Williams. In the last chapter, Richard and Betty are in Jacob’s room, going through his things; thus we know that Jacob is dead.  Many critics have noted that Jacob seems to move like a ghost through the book, that the emphasis is on the impossibility of knowing anyone. At the last, we may feel that even though we know the sequence and some moment by moment events of Jacob’s life, we never know him — we see his life as if the moments had already evaporated — as if he were already dead.” ( From this site )

Il poeta e critico Leandro Piantini definisce così la narrativa di Francesca Mazzucato:
“..vulcanica esternazione di umori ribollenti,il corpo viene raccontato nei suoi segreti, nelle sue tenere debolezze, nella sua indifesa e toccante precarietà.”

Sul linguaggio di Francesca Mazzucato, la scrittrice Fiorenza Aste scrive:

Un testo in ebook che narra di una fine: una feroce epilogo.
Crudele e commovente insieme, racconta cosa succede fra due amanti.
Fra la donna senza nome e Pierre la tessitura si è logorata, non resta che mettersi a nudo, ma lui, ha ancora paura. La paura che non l’ha mai abbandonato.
La protagonista, per la prima volta, racconta come questo suo rapporto le ha scavato dentro, sconfinando oltre ogni trincea e quanto Pierre abbia “stuprato la sua innocenza nelle cose d’amore”. Passando attraverso il corpo, con il tramite del corpo, è mutato diventando inquinante e crudele.
A causa della trascuratezza e noncuranza dell’uomo?
Forse.
O, forse, non hanno mai parlato lo stesso linguaggio.
Forse lei hai “Inventato” quella intesa? Quella predestinazione?

Pierre, in fondo, è solo un pavido normale uomo sposato che non vuole mettere a repentaglio la sua tranquillità famigliare, le abitudini, il centro commerciale la domenica, il suo essere musicista nel tempo libero per sentirsi importante.

Dipenderà dal rapporto con la madre? La donna “bianchicapelli”? O con la moglie, trasandata e senza alcuna civetteria ma sempre capace di perdonare l’uomo che considera come “un terzo figlio”.
Non si sa, se non si divora questo testo di crudeltà sopraffina, scritto con un montaggio calibrato e difficile, che, di certo, non lascia indenni.
Niente di speciale, quindi. O tutto. Tutto quello che deve compiersi.

La storia d’amore giunge all’ atto finale, c’è un pezzo magistrale con una corale zurighese di “macabri pipistrelli” che diventano i protagonisti di una favola nera, c’è, ancora, l’amore negato, la premura dimenticata, di assenza di confini.

E c’e Bach.Il vero tema, il tempo e il ritmo, il respiro di questa colta scrittura delle passioni, che diventa drammatico epilogo di una fine forse già nota.
C’è Bach. Colonna sonora, protagonista, causa ed effetto.
Tutto l’ebook è scrittura ma anche sinfonia, con un reiterato e ripetuto omaggio reiterato all’immenso compositore.

In particolare, il pezzo famosissimo e meraviglioso attorno a cui tutto ruota è “Wachet auf, ruft uns die Stimme” del quale viene proposto un frammento di traduzione italiana.

Scrittura avida, colta, ferocissima, danneggiata, vorace, febbrile: ultimo atto di una storia che ha inquinato e violentato la protagonista, per un tempo troppo lungo. Ma che, questa volta, non manca al concerto, e riesce, sulle note del compositore, a fare la sua uscita trionfale dalla gabbia di claustrofobia e dolore in cui era rinchiusa.

Le hai lasciate in sospeso. Hai ipotizzato una breccia possibile. Hai cullato la mia illusione e solleticato la mia voglia di adescarti con le parole delle tue fantasie, con quello che è davvero capitato, con quello che, davvero, hai sempre amato.
In tempo reale, Andrea. Le tracce, l’addio, il dolore, la voluta vendetta, la fantasia, la speranza, l’illlusione, la passione, che è ancora febbre”
Di cosa si tratta?
Ritornare a quell’intimità condivisa. Un’ipotesi. Appare per un’attimo, come un ologramma. Forse è solo un minuscolo frammento di speranza, un lampo così’ desiderato che acceca, accarezzato in un crescendo di pathos narrativo. Difficile interrompere questa lettura.

Sotto forma di narrazione epistolare e con un coraggioso svelamento della propria intimità, dei desideri e delle parti intime e friabili “che non si possono raccontare”, prosegue l’esplorazione di Francesca Mazzucato attorno e attraverso quello che, alla fine di una storia, è un tormento senza fine, un sadico gioco, o lo sguardo impietoso ma consapevole su una diversa prospettiva. Una storia da leggere “sentendola sulla pelle”, e rabbrividendo al contatto con ogni singola parola. Parole che l’autrice sceglie con colta maestria, riuscendo a stupire, eccitare, aprire possibili paesaggi, allargare la concezione contemporanea di relazione, empatia, sensualità e amore.

Epistolary form of narration and a courageous unveiling of intimacy, desires and of  private parts of the soul, Francesca Mazzucato continues the exploration  around and through what, at the end of a story, it is a never-ending torment, a sadistic game, or the pitiless gaze but aware of a different perspective. A story to read “feeling it on the skin”, and shivered at the contact with every single word. Words that the author chooses with great skill, managing to surprise, excite, open chances , expand the contemporary understanding of relationship, empathy, sensuality and love.
