“In Night and Day, Virginia Woolf appears to have taken the plot of her husband Leonard’s 1914 novel, The Wise Virgins, and refitted it to accommodate the facts of her own engagement to him, with the significant difference of patterning the new heroine not upon herself but upon her sister, Vanessa, in every way a woman whom we would call more normal and adjusted (however ‘liberated’) than Virginia. As always with Woolf, familiarity with the facts of her life will afford the satisfaction of watching a writer turn life into art. Night and Day stands out in Woolf’s shelf of novels, however, as an example of romantic comedy in the high, melancholy-tinged style of Shakespeare and Mozart…. ( it continues here  )
